Working in the Villages

Sign Language Course

In August 2006 we held our first ever sign language course. Attendees included 6 parents of deaf children, one teacher, one community rehabilitation worker, and Spring of Hope staff: Mawazi, Annette and Teresha. We have now had two workshops on sign, one in August held by a sign language teacher. The other, a three-week course spanning December and January run by the Jinja Deaf Association. Our hope is to hold a workshop every school holiday.

Craft group

Craft Group

In September Annette started a weekly craft group making items to sell. The profit from this goes to the parents of the disabled children and the project itself. Currently we have 8 parents and 4 disabled young people making necklaces, earrings, purses, bookmarks, and cards. We have already raised over £200 through people taking our necklaces to the USA and UK, where they been a big hit! Through a Ugandan friend we have an opportunity to sell necklaces at a craft shop in Kampala, and from next year we plan to sell our items at a popular tourist restaurant in Jinja.
